Pleasing Even the Pickiest Young Patients
Like most parents, Megan Bishop is always looking for the best care for her children, especially when tending to her daughter Elise’s huge, loving smile. Elise has a big personality to match her big heart, and Megan knows she can be “very specific” about things and even a bit ornery at times. Elise likes to be very informed about what is going on around her, and if she’s unsure or unhappy, she’s not afraid to voice her opinion or ask questions about it.
That’s why, when Elise needed four cavities filled, finding a new pediatric dentist was a tall order for Megan. She needed to find a dentist who was as patient as they were professional - a common struggle for many parents in Megan’s position.
“Our previous dentist only did Elise’s cleaning and well-check. I was referred to Dr. Chan, and she got us in right away. Overall, everyone that we have interacted with there has been wonderful - very nice and very patient,” Megan explained. “She [my daughter] has a lot of questions, so she will ask the receptionist if she’s getting a shot. She will ask everybody she talks to every possible question under the sun so that she can try to calm herself.”
Megan said she was impressed with how Mayfield Smiles treated her daughter and how smooth their visit was from the first moments. “It’s not fun having to take a 7-year-old to the dentist to have cavities filled, but the experience with the staff was very anxiety-reducing because everyone was so friendly and very much focused on Elise - making sure that she was comfortable from the beginning when we walked in.”
When it came time to receive her dental work, Elise was able to relax. “Dr. Chan was very, very patient - much more than I was, I think! She was willing to do whatever was needed to make Elise comfortable. There were YouTube videos; she was showing us pictures of her darling son - just getting to know Elise and what was going to work best for her, and how to keep her calm and have an enjoyable experience.”
Megan has now been taking Elise to Mayfield Smiles for a year. She said she was pleasantly surprised with how well their visits have gone - perhaps even too well! “My daughter now loves Dr. Chan. At first, I thought I was never going to get her to brush her teeth again because her experience getting her cavities filled was so great - she wanted to go back!”
