Tooth Extractions

There are various reasons for needing a tooth extracted - extreme periodontal disease, decay, broken or chipped, and many other reasons. Doctors Chan, Hudec, LoPresti, and Schuster will make the decision of what the best path to take is for each individual patient. If extraction is needed, replacements will be discussed.

When a tooth is extracted, a blood clot must form at the open wound to stop the blood from flowing out. We will ask you to bite on gauze for 30-45 minutes or until the bleeding stops to ensure this blood clot forms. In the healing time (72 hours), we recommend not using a straw, sucking on anything, drinking alcohol, or brushing teeth near the extraction. For up to 48 hours, we recommend using ice packs to reduce swelling. Resume your normal dental routine after 24 hours, brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day. If extreme pain, swelling, or bleeding persists after 2-3 days, contact our office immediately at 440-461-5482.

If medication does not seem to be working, please call our office at 440-461-5482. In the instance that antibiotics were prescribed, continuing taking them for the prescribed amount of time. Remember to drink lots of fluids and cater your diet to what you are comfortable and able to tolerate.
