Natural Tooth-Colored Fillings

Mayfield Smiles is a mercury-free practice. We choose to be mercury-free because it’s been known that silver/mercury fillings aren’t as strong, or as appealing, as porcelain inlays. There are many cons to silver fillings. Between containing 50% mercury, ability to be weakened, and potentially corrode, we feel that porcelain inlays are the way to go. Porcelain inlays and tooth-colored restorations are hardly noticeable and are much stronger than silver/mercury fillings - and even the standard tooth. The composite restorative material in porcelain inlays is bonded to the teeth, creating a firm fit to the natural tooth. The tooth remains intact and becomes much stronger.

Inlays and Onlays

Dentists will use inlays and onlays in result of more than 50% of the biting surface on the tooth has been damaged. An inlay is placed inside the architecture of the tooth while an onlay extends over the tooth. These are made of either porcelain, gold, or composite resin.

Considerations for Inlays and Onlays

A traditional filling can reduce the strength of the natural up to 50%. Inlays and Onlays are bonded onto the tooth and increase the strength up to 75%. These can last between 10 and 12 years. Onlays can be a great substitute when damage to a tooth does not permit a dental crown.

Replacing Silver Fillings

In just two appointments, your silver fillings can be completely replaced with tooth-colored onlays!

In your first appointment,

  1. Silver fillings are removed

  2. We will take an impression of your teeth for the onlay to be made.

  3. We will place a temporary onlay onto your teeth in the meantime until your new onlay arrives from the lab.

In your second appointment,

  1. Temporary onlay is removed

  2. A gel is placed on your tooth to prepare for your new onlay.

  3. Bonding cement is placed onto the tooth while a high-intensity light bonds everything together.

  4. Your new onlay is polished.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a method used to restore and improve the appearance of someone’s smile. A tooth-colored resin bonded to the teeth and is used to repair teeth to alter their shape or close gaps between them. This procedure can typically take place in a single visit.
